Oral Probiotics: What the Research Actually Shows
Some research supports the idea that specific probiotic strains can help crowd out cavity-associated bacteria and modestly improve gum-health measures during use. The evidence is real, but it is strain-specific, short-term in most studies, and does not amount to proof that any given commercial oral-probiotic product prevents cavities or gum disease long-term.
What "Oral Probiotics" Means
Oral probiotics are live microorganisms — usually specific Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, or Streptococcus strains — delivered via tablets, lozenges, chewing gum, or mouthwash, with the aim of favorably shifting the mouth's bacterial balance. This is distinct from gut-focused probiotics (like yogurt cultures), even though some strains overlap.
